I always love when I start with a sketch thinking I've got a plan only for it to change as I go through papers or photos. Usually that means something sparked an idea and inspiration has found it's way to me. For this layout both the papers and the photos were a big influence on what I did with the sketch!

I used a sketch from the NEW Sketches w/ 3x5 & 5x3" Photos: One-page Sketches set. You can actually see a small sliver of the sketch I used as the starting point for this layout.

The sketch has two sets of horizontal strips going down the edges of the layout with an opening between them for a photo. I sat down with my 3 x 5" photo and a plan with what I wanted to do and then I started going through my papers.

This super bright and fun collection from Simple Stories was sitting on my table so it was the first I started looking at. I came across this patterned paper that was covered in scallop strips and it immediately sparked an idea. I love the thought of cutting two vertical strips in the same width of the horizontal strips on the sketch. Plus, I really, REALLY wanted to stitch on all those scallop pieces!

After I picked out that scallop strip paper I changed my photo. The 3 x 5" photo I had would have worked with these papers, but these three photos of my boys with their all of their grandmas caught my eye. So I adapted the design to work with three smaller photos instead of the single 3 x 5" photo.

To add even more detail and dimension to the scallop strips design, I added several foam and sticker scallop strips with foam adhesive and some black punched hearts. I love how the black hearts really stand out among all those bright colors!
