Sketch Support #44 | Learn How to Use and Adapt Scrapbook Sketches | Day 1

Once a month learn how to use scrapbook sketches and adapt them to fit different styles, photo sizes, and themes. Sketches = endless scrapbooking ideas with little effort. Sketches do all the heavy lifting allowing you to have all the fun!

It never fails, the February Sketch Support sketch always ends up being some sort of heart design. I think I just immediately think of hearts because of Valentine's Day and I have always loved creating designs with a strong focus on hearts. You could take a peek through my house, clothes, and jewelry to see that I enjoy having hearts all around me!

Here is the two-page sketch that I'll be using this week:

This month it is a 3-page PDF of 22 different sketch options. That makes 23 sketches for this month of Sketch Support. There are options that show how to change up the papers, use more photos, use less photos, there are three one-page options, and then an 8-1/2 x 11" option. The fun part is that you could use each option as a layout on its own, but you could also mix and match different options for endless possibilities!

There are also four new cut files that are made specifically to go with this sketch. I made two that are hearts and after Drew saw those he decided to make a similar set as well that features Xs and Os.

For my first layout I made a few small changes, mostly due to my photos, while also adding a themed element to the hearts frame.

Variation #1 - Flipping the sketch.

The first change I made to the sketch was flipping the design. With the direction Jackson was facing in the photos flipping the design ensured that he was facing towards the middle of the page instead of facing towards the edge of the layout. This is always the most common reason I will flip a design. It's a super easy solution to keeping the focus and attention on the layout.

Variation #2 - Using more photos.

I had this set of photos of Jackson enjoying his favorite dessert that I had printed as 3-1/2 x 2-1/2. That's one of my favorite, go-to sizes! On the left page I used four of them in place of two 3 x 5" photos and journaling block. I also added a larger mat to the grouping of the photos. This is one of the easiest ways to include more photos! Splitting a larger photo into two smaller photos is a great solution for those times when you have more photos to use.

On the right page I used one 3-1/2 x 2-1/2" photo in place of the 2-1/2 x 3-1/2" photo on the sketch.

Variation #3 - Changing the orientation of the photos.

One of the things that I love about splitting a larger photo into two smaller photos is it allows you to change up the orientation of your photos. On the sketch there are 3 x 5" vertical photos and when I split those into two smaller photos, I was able to use horizontal photos instead. It's the same if you want to split a horizontal photo into two, you would use two vertical photos. It's a great solution for those times when a sketch design doesn't fit the photo orientation you need.

Variation #4 - Moving the journaling.

Because those four photos on the left page are slightly wider than the photos on the sketch, I decided to move the journaling to the right page. On the sketch there is another 3 x 5" photo on the opposite page, and since I didn't have that I had a lot more room to add my journaling in that area.

Variation #5 - Adding a themed element to the hearts.

I really, really wanted to find a way to incorporate the theme into the hearts. I tend to create in a very theme heavy way so that's just where my brains always wants to go. At first I had an idea to use circles and turn them all into chocolate chip cookies. But, my love for hearts took over and I decided to go a different route.

I really wanted to work some color into the design and with chocolate chip cookies I would miss out on that. Those hearts are great opportunity to add lots of color and pattern! Instead, I decided to go with hearts in a variety of colors including one that could work for the base of chocolate chip cookies. Then I added some brown cardstock "chocolate chips" to them.

To some of the other hearts I added a brown drip die cut to resemble the chocolate sauce on the dessert Jackson loves. I ended up loving the look of this! I think this is why I get so themed focused and adding those little details, it just seems to make the layout that much more special.

That's all for today! Be sure to check back tomorrow for my second layout using this sketch!!
