Sketch Support #48 | Learn How to Use and Adapt Scrapbook Sketches | Day 2

Once a month learn how to use scrapbook sketches and adapt them to fit different styles, photo sizes, and themes. Sketches = endless scrapbooking ideas with little effort. Sketches do all the heavy lifting allowing you to have all the fun!

For my second layout I made some big changes to the sketch and put most of my focus on the left page design.

Here is the two-page sketch that I'll be using this week:

This month it is a 3-page PDF of 22 different sketch options. That makes 23 sketches for this month of Sketch Support. There are options that show how to change up the papers, use more photos, use less photos, there are three one-page options, and then an 8-1/2 x 11" option. The fun part is that you could use each option as a layout on its own, but you could also mix and match different options for endless possibilities!

Supplies used - Cardstock: American Crafts; Patterned paper: Echo Park, Simple Stories, and My Mind's Eye; Foam title: American Crafts; Die cuts, arrows, frame, and hearts: American Crafts; Embroidery floss: DMC; Computer font: Century Gothic

Variation #1 - Use different photos sizes and amounts.

I started off this layout with four 6 x 4" photos that I cropped down to 4 x 4" and then arranged them in a single row in the middle of the layout. This a really, really big change from the original sketch design, but my focus, when it came to the sketch, was really on the paper design, not so much the photos. I adjusted the photos to work with that instead of relying on the layout of the sketch photos.

Variation #2 - Extending the left page design across both pages.

I wanted to create a large frame that goes across both pages of the layout so I extended the strips. I thought this would be a fun way to utilize part of the sketch and create something unique. I have always loved two-page designs with middle row of 4 x 4" photos and some sort of decorative frame and that concept came to mind when I started playing around with this sketch.

I still followed the general design of the strips, they are just longer and I added some small spacing between each strip.

Don't be afraid to experiment with sketch designs! Sometimes it's fun to take one element from the sketch and create something based on that. It's a great way to stretch your creative muscles and discover something new that you might not have thought to do otherwise!

Variation #3 - Adding extra strips to the frame design.

I added one more section of strips to make a slightly larger frame. Because of the changes I made with the photos, I had a little more room for extra strips.

That's all for today! Come back tomorrow for layout #3!
