Creating w/ 6x6" Paper Pads | X Background Pattern

This layout is from an online class I taught called Pattern Play. The whole concept of the class was creating patterns made up of smaller pieces. The intent was to use 6x6" or 6x8" paper pads, but scraps can be a great alternative! This "X" pattern was one of my favorites!

Supplies used - Cardstock: American Crafts; Patterned paper: My Mind's Eye; Acrylic title and hearts: Color Cast Designs; Heart punch: Fiskars; Embroidery floss: DMC; Computer font: Century Gothic
What I loved and appreciated most about creating this class was that it really pushed me to think outside of the box and play around with different methods and shapes to create and construct patterns.

This particular patterns stars with cutting lots of 1/2" strips in various patterns and colors. I bet this would be really cool with a monochromatic color scheme too! Like a bunch of different red patterns or blue patterns!

To begin with this design you start in the center and stair-step the strips to the corners. I used a ruler and pencil to draw a cross in the center and used that as my guide for the first few pieces. Then after you have those first pieces you can build out from there.
To really highlight the pattern detail I used a dark blue embroidery floss to add stitched lines along the design. This really made that pattern stand out!

When it came to the rest of the layout I kept things simple. With so much detail in the background design, I didn't want to overwhelm my photos with too much. I added an acrylic title and hearts and my journaling.
