Scrapbook Design Idea | Diamond Background

We just reached the end of the 10 week Pattern Play class that was all about building patterns out of smaller pieces. I have always loved creating really detailed designs with smaller pieces, so creating patterns are something I explore often and something I wanted to share with the scrapbooking community. The layout I'm sharing today (is actually NOT from the Pattern Play class) is one that I find so fun and so simple - a diamond background.

Supplies used - Cardstock: American Crafts; Patterned paper: My Mind's Eye, Echo Park, and Simple Stories; Alphabet stickers: Elle's Studio; Wooden stars: unknown; Star punches: Fiskars; Arrow stickers: Echo Park; Word/phrase stickers: Simple Stories and Echo Park; Embroidery floss: DMC; Computer font: Century Gothic

To create this pattern you just need a bunch of squares in various patterned papers you arrange them side by side at a 45º angle.

For this page in particular I wanted the diamond pattern to fit within a rectangle background so I had a white border around the outer edges. To do that, I cut two large pieces of cardstock in the size that I wanted my patterned background to be. Then I started in the middle and adhered my tilted squares on those cut cardstock pieces.

I always recommend starting in the middle when building patterns like this. This ensures that your pattern is centered and ends at the same points on the edges.

Another important detail when building designs like this is to do something to define the edges of the pieces. My personal favorite is to distress the edges with my fingernail. Other options include using ink or paint along the edges.

One of my absolutely favorite details to add that really makes that pattern detail stand out is hand-stitching. Especially in a high contrast embroidery floss color!
