I tend to kind of geek out over a theme. I love finding ways to incorporate that theme into the overall design of a layout!

Supplies used - Cardstock: American Crafts; Patterned paper: American Crafts, Vicki Boutin; Guitar cut file: Silhouette Design Store #2965; Film strip cut file: Silhouette Design Store #153319; Acrylic stars: Color Cast Designs; Word/title stickers: Simple Stories; Word/phrase stickers: Cocoa Vanilla; Embroidery floss: DMC; Computer font: Century Gothic
This layout is based on a two-page sketch that had a large background and vertical strips on the left page. I used that as my starting point and swapped out those strips for my themed element: guitars.

Whenever I want to go theme heavy with a sketch design, I will look at the elements on that sketch and consider the theme I am creating with and how I can incorporate that theme into the design. It all starts with shapes. Looking at the shapes in the design and thinking of themed shapes that are similar.

For example...
A square can be a: birthday present, envelope, TV, etc.
A circle can be a: beach ball, sun, flower, etc.
Horizontal strips can be: roads w/ cars, flying airplanes, arrows, etc.
Vertical strips can be: guitars (as shown on my layout), flowers w/ stems, trees, etc.
Personally, I think it's fun to imagine and create themed elements in place of simple shapes! There are so many unique possibilities and it's a great way to exercise your creative side of the brain!
