This layout is from a class I taught at She Loves Color last year. It was a part of my Creating with Sketches class that was basically a live version of the Sketch Support series I do here. It was such a fun class!

This layout was all about breaking up a square background into smaller pieces. Anytime I look at a sketch with a large, single background piece I always think about the different ways I can construct that same background with different pieces or shapes or patterns.

For this background I used a variety of sizes of strips in a variety of patterns. I loved that using all of those strips allowed me to work more color and patterns into that square background design.

I also added different stitching details to the strips for some texture and dimension.
Then to finish out the design there are two flower clusters in opposite corners that help to frame the whole design.

According to the spec sheet, the modern automatic Max Bill (there are also quartz and manual options, if you want a real bargain) runs about $1,000, with a 38mm steel case and short lugs that make it wear small. The various dial link offerings could’ve been link pulled out of a 1960s Junghans catalog, nearly unchanged from what Bill must’ve sketched out link all those years ago.
There are a few things I might change – the gap at the rear that would normally hold the balance link wheel stands out link as though something is obviously missing. But maybe that's link part of the charm. It certainly adds some visual tension.
